Over the last weekend in April, KWF members and supporters attended what's probably the biggest gaming convention in San Diego, Kingdom Con. (Full disclosure: One of our staff is an organizer for Kingdom Con as well!)
Kingdom-Con is a San Diego Tabletop Gaming Convention located in Mission Valley and has been going strong for the last 7 years. Starting out primarily as a Warmachine miniatures tournament, it grew into a multi faceted community gaming event, where players interested in all genres of games and clubs come together to celebrate games.
One of the best things about Kingdom-Con is that anyone can just show up and find a game to play in. Whether it's a table top miniature game, board game or RPG. It doesn't matter, if you are a player, creator, manufacturer or someone new to gaming, everyone can come and find something to do and be a part of the community.
The backbone of the convention is an incredible Volunteer Staff that are not only locals, but fly in from all over the United States and organize the different rooms with game masters to fill the schedule with all kinds of games to play. Everyone brings something to the party and makes it a great time.
This year was the biggest year yet, with a rough count of over 1000 gamers at the beautiful Crowne Plaza Mission Valley! Kingdom Con filled nearly every ballroom at the hotel and ended up using every table the convention had! There were massive tournaments of all types (miniatures, card games, table top), Open Play Tables, Role-Playing Games, Card Games, Board Games, Demos, Underage gamer events and much much more. It was especially great that Saturday of the convention was also International TableTop Day and there were several special events showcasing the unofficial holiday.
What were the hot games of the weekend? The Warhammer 40k tournament is always huge as well as Warmachine, but X-Wing had an incredible showing for their tournaments too. There were so many genres of miniature table top games, almost too many to mention: Sci Fi, Fantasy and Historical. From a 6mm Alamo scenario, to 28mm Lord of the Rings Helms Deep, to far future skirmish combat with INFINITY. Also the annual Saturday Night 'Drunk Quest' is a massive adult only tournament that always sells out it's attendance. An incredible experience overall. And if you happen to be in San Diego next year when Kingdom Con is happening, make it a point to stop by. Bring a friend and make some new ones. You won't be disappointed.
